Jacques smuggled Nonny through the kitchen door and into Michael’s affable oversight.

On his way back through the house, he inclined his head to the entourage on the stairs. Two ladies—presumably the mares—chatted in Japanese. Tsumiko now cuddled the cat-tailed girl, and Sansa had secured a sullen boy in need of a stylist.

In the front hall’s brighter light, Jacques paused to neaten. Lord. Not simply children. Children who shed.

A thunderous knock startled him into action. Opening the door, he looked up.

And wondered where Argent had got to as his lordship’s friend bent close. And sniffed.
