LMM 58: Gifts for the Hostess

Claimer: I do hereby claim all rights and responsibility for the characters in this series of vignettes because the Amaranthine Saga is mine. (Which means I should probably behave myself since anything I say or do could be taken as canon.)  Indulge the lot of us, especially for the one who isn’t empty-handed.

Chapter Fifty-Eight: Gifts for the Hostess

“So you’re the one.” Harmonious Starmark, large as life. “I’ve been wanting to meet Stately House’s new butler.”

Jacques’ attention flicked briefly to a second specimen of strapping masculinity, who looked on with famously copper eyes. Two older children—perhaps ten or twelve—clung to his hands. As if crossers were in vogue as hostess gifts when visiting Stately House.

“Everyone’s curious.” The spokesperson for the dog clans oozed bonhomie. “You’re Argent’s kin …?”

“He is Smythe.” Argent stalked forward, inserting himself between Jacques and their guests. “He belongs to Stately House.”

“Oh, be frank.” Harmonious beamed. “It’s the same thing.”
