Claimer: I do hereby claim all rights and responsibility for the characters in this series of vignettes because the Amaranthine Saga is mine. (Which means I should probably behave myself since anything I say or do could be taken as canon.) Indulge the lot of us, especially the likeable one.

The American
Jacques slid into Michael’s chair. “You’re American.”
“Sure am!” Jiminy left off twiddling to ask, “Are you one of First-sensei’s students, too?”
“Michael’s? Lord, no. I’m Stately House’s butler.”
“Fancy!”
“A bit.” Jacques poured for himself and scanned Jiminy’s setting—abundant books and crystals sprouting from cabinet drawers. “You’re like him, then? A ward.”
“Yes. My placement’s a real honor.”
“I sometimes forget he’s importantish.”
“Good.” Jiminy shook hair out of his eyes. “Den isn’t about digits.”
Jacques decided he liked him. “Give me your perspective.”
“On…?”
“I’ve never managed an apprentice before. What might you consider mentoring faux pas?”

I like that Jacques goes to another apprentice on how to be a mentor and not to Michael who is Jiminy’s mentor – good lesson that!

Good job Jacques! Taking his new job seriously and seeking a little advice. Go straight to a source.
