A large bird burst on the scene, seemingly out of nowhere. Jacques started forward when the thing grasped Akira in its talons and made to carry him off.
Deece held him back. “He is safe. This is their game.”
“Mon dieu.” Jacques crowded closer to Deece’s bulk, no better than Mori, who was all but wrapped around the feline’s other leg.
The bird—with plumage straight out of legend—circled lazily, a slow-motion glide. Then warbling a melodious warning, dropped Akira, who whooped and did a cannon ball.
Jacques tugged Deece’s arm. “What is that?”
“Suuzu. He is a phoenix.
