ART: Lapis Mossberne

“Hello, Sealed Boy.” Lapis Mossberne is a dragon, a scholar, a bachelor, a romantic, and a charter member of the Five. If you’ve been missing him (he last appeared in Bk2 of the main series), be sure to read Lord Mettlebright’s Man, where he’s been helping Jacques Smythe (of the Uppington Smythes) face his fear of dragons. ::twinkle::

“You’ve had too much star wine, Lord Mossberne.”

“I know.” He exhaled on a fluttering note that definitely wasn’t human. “It did not help. It never does.”

Mossberne? As in Lapis Mossberne? Tenma stopped breathing. Could this person really be one of the Five? Catching Quen’s eye, he pointed and mouthed dragon.

Rolled eyes and a nod.

But the exchange may have been a mistake, for the dragon lord’s head turned, and light fell upon a lean face, putting fire into half-lidded sapphire eyes. “El-o-quence,” he drawled. “Why is that boy sealed?”

He slithered out of Quen’s grasp, and an instant later, Tenma was holding up a bleary Rivven who smelled strongly of flowers, spice, and liquor.

“Hello, sealed boy.”

Jacques Smythe of the Uppington Smythes. Maybe he wasn’t your favorite character in Tsumiko and the Enslaved Fox, but Uncle Jackie is here to stay. Lord Mettlebright’s Man will probably hang around for several hundred (admittedly short) chapters, skimming through the backdrop of the series, giving you glimpses of life at Stately House from the point of view of an ordinary, unendowed, freeloading gentleman’s gentleman.

He was still sulking in his linen cupboard when the younger Starmark tapped lightly and proffered a dainty crystal goblet. “My father sends his compliments and would like your opinion of his gift.”

“Why?”

“Argent spoke highly of your palate.”

Naturellement.” Jacques lifted, tilted, swirled, and sniffed with patent hauteur. Thick amber, bedizened by tiny galaxies. Holding the first sip in his mouth, he closed his eyes and knew bliss. “What is this?” he sighed.

“Star wine.”

ART: Founders Coffee

Jiminy & Melissa. I enjoy surprises, which is probably why I’ve never advertised the inclusion of Founders Coffee in Tamiko and the Two Janitors. That way, my longtime readers would enjoy stumbling across the elements I borrowed from one of my fanfics (Froth, Mir/San AU). Mostly setting & the fact that Founders is run by brothers/owners.

“You’re packing crystals. Can I have a peek?”

He crossed a line by slipping his fingers under the cloth, questing upward. A moment later, she had the offending hand twisted and pinned to cold stone. The angle forced him down, and she reinforced her objection by pushing his head until his cheek met marble.

“Ow.”

Melissa’s face flushed, and she checked to see if anyone had noticed her manhandling the barista. Both Mom and Magda had been thorough and creative in teaching her ways to dissuade unwanted masculine attention.

The other barista stepped up. “I do beg your pardon, miss. Did his antics unsettle you?” Pressing one large hand to the back of Jiminy’s head, his voice deepened to a growl. “He knows better.”

Details, Details: Melissa is the biological daughter of Christopher Armstrong, the “Kith handler” who visits Kimiko’s classroom back in Book 2. Chris was raised by the Nightspangle pack, which is why Hanoo, Yoota, and Ploom all knew him (and his partner Cove).

Two Janitors. It’s not often that a book has 3 titular characters (okay, okay, Betsy, Tacy, and Tib comes to mind, but that’s old school and really beside the point). I showed you Fox’s portrait of Tamiko on release day. Meet the janitors!

ART: Tami Reaverson

The Third Miko. Tamiko and the Two Janitors, the third book in the Amaranthine Saga, introduces everyone to Principal Tami Reaverson, who has big plans for her small town.

“How was the conference?”

Tami’s heart skipped with nervous excitement. “Amazing. And intense. We had classes from morning to night, but they were all so interesting. And I was able to meet real Amaranthine!”

“Look at you, snubbing the slang!”

“Our first lessons were in etiquette.” Tami shook her head. “Everyone’s always saying Rivven, even on the news. Most of the attendees didn’t even know there was a proper term.”

“But they set you straight?”

“Kindly.” She patted her satchel. “I brought back so much literature, and some of the information packets are thick as dictionaries. Even if we’re not selected, I’m going to read it all.”

Kimiko took in the Amaranthine’s showy coloring, sheer wardrobe, and excess of accessories and pegged him for a dragon. But not the one she’d been expecting, for Lord Mossberne was a blue.

I haven’t treated you to art in a while. Let’s have another of FoxOfTwilight’s sketches featuring a cast member from Book 2. You know this guy, right? ::twinkle::

Kith, Kin, and Crosser

“Adorable, is he not?”

Eloquence nearly laughed, for Tenma seemed confused over which person Lapis found adorable: Laud, Ever, or Rise. And in finding equal appeal in all of Quen’s denmates—Kith, Kin, and crosser—Tenma earned a greater measure of trust on all sides.

ART: Heart of a Dog

Famous Parent. Eloquence Starmark’s dad is one of the Five. No big deal, right? ::twinkle:: His classmate is understandably impressed.

• • •

“Does that mean you’re related to Harmonious Starmark?”

“Closely.” Quen nodded to the embroidered crest on his shoulder—copper thread glinting against dark brown cloth. “Dad’s the spokesperson for the dog clans.”

“You’re a dog.”

“Yes.”

“And your mother’s human?”

Tenma’s grip had tightened, but this wasn’t fear. If anything, he seemed eager. His scent had brightened considerably. Eloquence smiled. “Yes, Mum is human. She’s my stepmother.”

“I saw that special. The one with all the interviews.”

“Who hasn’t?” Quen rolled his eyes. “They’ve aired ‘Heart of a Dog’ every year since my brother was born. It’s becoming an international Christmas Eve tradition.”

ART: Eloquence Starmark

Born the same year as the Emergence, Ever Starmark was the most famous hybrid on the planet. His mother, Dad’s second bondmate, was human, and Ever’s very existence was considered proof that peace wasn’t just possible, it offered new possibilities for the human and inhuman races.

Eloquence slouched into Rise and smiled at Ever’s shifting expression. He knew every quirk and dip of those auburn ears, the swirl of emotion through shining eyes, and the eager thump of his stubby tail. If Quen was completely honest, Ever was the main reason he’d dragged his feet about enrollment. He couldn’t exactly bring a three-year-old to class.

How was he supposed to explain high school to Ever?

Kimiko and the Accidental Proposal (Amaranthine Saga, #2)

Runt. Kimiko and the Accidental Proposal opens by introducing readers to Eloquence Starmark, who holds a unique place within his clan. For reasons, he never expected to have a bondmate, but he was (mostly) content and entirely grateful for the den he shares with a bachelor uncle, a baby brother, and whoever else may be looking for a cozy place to bed down. No matter what, Quen has Ever, and Ever has Quen. Continue reading
