Must Love Orphans

“That’s rather a long story.”

Jacques glanced down. “No, I’m not currently in possession of my pants.”

“Look here! He’s really more of a she.”

“Claims to cook. Definitely a good mother. Orphan specialist.”

“Yes, right here.”

He handed off the phone.

“Sonnet Cook, sir, lately of Merritt House.”

“No, I’m not currently in possession of his pants. I hung them up to dry.”

“Quite. Nearly caught his death.”

He blushed. “Nothing of the sort.”

“Yes. I raised two. How many…? Oh? Oh, my.”

“Very good, sir.”

Sonnet slowly lowered the phone.

Jacques asked, “Well?”

He whispered, “I love you.”
