Jacques allowed Kip to steer him out the door and into an alley.

“You’re not a reaver.” His confusion seemed to be getting in the way of courtesies, but no matter.

“You’re not wrong.” Hooking one of Kip’s beltloops, he murmured, “Where do you keep your tail?”

The ploy worked. Kip cracked a smile. “You’re very comfortable with closeness.”

Naturellement. Stately House is overrun with crossers, and I’m the little beasts’ favorite uncle.”

Jacques could practically see Kip’s twitching whiskers, so he nattered on, giving the squirrel clansman reasons to trust. And to relax his guard.

Because Argent was descending.
