Jacques was better at conversational Japanese, but Argent had the highest of expectations. So Jacques was still toiling over a kanji quiz when a light rap interrupted the tail end of lesson hour.

Apparently oblivious to the many barriers in place, Michael leaned through the door. “Apologies for interrupting, but we have something of an… event underway. One that threatens to delay dinner.”

Argent had unfurled nearly half his flourish before another word could be said.

“Ah.” Michael raised both hands. “I don’t mean threaten in the sense of a threat.”

Nose to the air, Argent growled, “What is that?”
