Jacques needed a few days, and he spent them hiding in Cat and Canary’s room. They didn’t ask questions, only purred over him and filled in for him. But when Argent slept past his scheduled return, Jacques wrestled his butlerish armor into place and went back to work.

Meetings to attend.

Letters to answer.

Calls to make.

Disappointments to bury.

In some ways, it was a relief that nobody had known. Well, almost nobody. He’d nearly found the courage to text Harrison when Argent shuffled from the bedroom, barefoot and rumpled, stomach growling.

“Have Sonnet bring a tray? Several trays.”
