Apology
“Of course she’d want her mother. Any child would. Well… I certainly never wanted Maman, but if it was you, I know I’d want….” He stopped himself.
Sonnet stole a kiss.
Not a proper one.
It was an apology.
Jacques knew how these things were supposed to proceed. Knew how to be generous. “You’ll go to her. You must. Hazel will be relying on you.”
“She is,” Sonnet whispered.
“I understand. I do.”
“But….”
Jacques wondered if Sonnet didn’t want to leave in much the same way he didn’t want to be left behind. He dared to ask, “How long?”
