He knew. Jacques had been through this so many times before. Usually, he saw it coming.
Sonnet tentatively asked, “May I confide in you?”
Somehow, Jacques summoned up a smile. “You may put your faith in both my insatiable curiosity and my discretion.”
“I heard from my daughter.”
“One of those lovely orphans you raised?”
“Hazel. She’s… in the family way. Again.”
“Lord, you’re a grandmother? You must be excited.”
Sonnet’s hold on him tightened. “The thing is… it wasn’t meant… mmm. They didn’t plan to have more than three children. Everyone’s in a to-do, and… Hazel wants her mother.”
