Sure Thing

Jacques had been missing this, so he made certain the kiss lingered. Sonnet drew back with obvious reluctance, and Jacques laughed breathlessly when the wolf moved on to sniffing and grumbling.

“That was dangerous.”

“Was it, though?” asked Jacques. “Wolves are the surest of sure things.”

“You trust me that much?”

Oui.” Jacques let himself be happy.

Sonnet looked away. Was he being shy? Jacques toyed with a loose lock of Sonnet’s hair while he waited to see if this homecoming would land him on lavender-scented sheets.

But Sonnet’s voice had changed when he said, “Jacques…? We need to talk.”
