Second Opinion

Jacques startled when someone slid into the seat across from his.

“Easy, Jacques. Lord Mettlebright placed a call, and Jiminy volunteered me.” He offered a hand. “Lou Booker, though my denmates call me Rook.”

Jacques brightened. “You’re a wolf.”

“And that makes you happy.” Rook’s expression warmed. “A refreshing change of pace.”

“Did someone decide I needed a bodyguard?”

Rook lifted his chin toward Harrison. “I think your boss wants me to decide if he’s worthy of you. Not that Argent said as much.”

Jacques tried to hide his smile behind his corndog.

Rook chuckled. “Which also makes you happy.”
