Sidelong

Jacques intercepted Josheb’s sidelong looks while Sonnet played valet. “No need to hold back. I’m not shy.”

“Can I get a quick peek?”

“So eager.” Jacques pulled his hair away from his nape. “This one’s oldest. It allowed me my first glimpse of Ephemera.”

In a hot second, Josheb was breathing down his neck. “How’s it work?”

“Who can say?” Jacques softly admitted, “I’ve always thought it must be magic.”

Fingertips traced over sensitive skin. “Is Lord Mettlebright taking volunteers?”

There was so much longing in Josheb’s tone. A twinge of envy Jacques understood it all too well. “I’ll ask.”
