As Good as Gone

Jacques spied another restless tail lash into view. Argent’s flourish was a bristling mess.

Michael noticed, too. “All right there, friend?”

Tsk. This is a bright one.”

“Another beacon?” asked Isla.

“Near enough.”

Jacques preferred to breakfast at a more leisurely pace, but he had mercy on Argent. “We’ll be off. However, I demand pictures.”

Argent raised his voice. “Nonny, stop loitering.”

With a soft clop of hooves, he entered, maneuvering baggage. “Just keeping handy. Here’s your things.”

Michael asked, “Did you want the car?”

“I want to be gone,” retorted Argent.

Jacques knew what that meant. “Lord, have mercy.”
