“What if?” Nonny echoed, anger mixing with incredulity. “What if they took me away? What if getting a new name means losing the one I have? Then you couldn’t say, ‘h-hey, nonny, nonny’ and mean me.”
“Nonny.” Jacques set aside suit samples. “I’m an insensitive brute.”
“Too right you are! I got a good place here. And a position.”
“And pants.”
The kid blinked, then narrowed his eyes. “If I didn’t want to be here, a well-placed kick is all I’d need to get myself gone.”
Jacques calmly moved his hands to cover his assets.
“Are you really that daft?”
