“We could look.”

“For what?”

“Your Amaranthine parent.” Jacques shrugged. “Clear up the mystery.”

Clear is it? Like crystal?” Nonny challenged. “Or will you just drag some bloke through the mud.”

“Argent is discreet. I’ll grant you, indiscretions make for awkward conversations, but it’s not inherently bad to be… well.”  Jacques couldn’t bring himself to say bastard. “It could mean a clan’s protection.”

“I have the guv’s.”

“You could claim an Amaranthine name and crest.”

“Got Himself’s.” Nonny rolled his eyes. “Or yours, if you do your outré thing.”

Jacques wavered. “But what if they’re glad to know of you?”
