Kohaku placed stones while Kagome chatted with Rin and Jaken the same way she kept Grandma Higurashi up to date on happenings at home. Little things to set their hearts at ease.

Sesshoumaru listened raptly. Had he believed it too late for his words to reach them?

“Anything you want to say?”

“Hnn.”

His stripes were a confusion of dark colors, but at her touch, they resolved into indigo.

Catching her loose hair, he pulled her near. “Tell them I am sorry.”

“Anything else?”

“I will be… late in joining them.”

Kagome’s heart clenched. “And?”

“And… I am not alone.”
