A Boy of Few Words

“Are you stuck?”

Kyrie shook his head and extended a flower—apology and explanation in one gesture.

Jacques beckoned, and the boy dropped trustingly into his arms.

“Aren’t you cold?”

Warbling, Kyrie nuzzled Jacques’ shoulder.

Wrapping the fullness of his new cloak—bless its velvet lining—around Kyrie’s body, Jacques asked, “Why are you capering about au naturel?”

The boy pointed.

“Use your words,” Jacques coaxed. “It’s safe with me.”

“Keep clean?” His voice was light and sweet, almost musical. Argent had coached him to speak sparingly.

Jacques beamed. “Would that your father were half so kind to his clothes.”
