Tread Lightly

“Was she… like Kyoko?” whispered Jacques.

Argent’s brows knit.

“Gilen’s mother rejected him?” He glanced Kyrie’s way. “Like Kyoko.”

“Their situations are quite different.” Argent drew him aside, drew a sigil on his palm. “Gilen’s father is human, a cosset in the cortege of Gilen’s mother. Feline traditions make their situation… delicate.”

“He’s not an orphan?”

Argent hesitated. “That term does not technically apply to any of these children.”

Jacques caught on. “Their Amaranthine parent doesn’t want them.”

“Or does not know about them. Or cannot publicly own them.” Argent nodded. “Reaver Dulcet is trusting his son’s future to us.”
