Lording it Over
Jacques backed into a wall and tried to climb it, only to realize that it was Deece.
Gingko arrived. “Really, Dad? You needed to do this now?”
Pale eyes narrowed familiarly, and Jacques swayed. Mon dieu. He’d known about Amaranthine taking animal form, but he’d never imagined… this.
On went Gingko. “The plan was allaying his fears, not multiplying them.”
The fox managed to look both haughty and unrepentant.
In other words, like himself.
And recognizing his master in the monster, Jacques mastered himself enough to ask, “Argent… you’re serving as my defense?”
Gingko snorted. “Not that you need it.”
