Chapter Forty: Comforting Truths

“Ready for this?”

“Do I look ready?” Jacques muttered.

Gingko eyed him critically. “You look nervous.”

“Petrified.”

“What if I told you Lapis is vegetarian?”

“I wouldn’t believe you.” Still, Jacques allowed Gingko to tug him along.

“But would you feel better?”

“A little,” he admitted. “Tell me something true instead.”

“He’s blue.”

Jacques sighed. “Something comforting.”

Gingko lowered his voice. “He’s embarrassed.”

That was unexpected. And surely unfounded. “I cannot imagine why.”

He whispered, “Tsumiko is curious as three kittens in a basket, and any minute now, she’s going to ask ….”

Jacques interrupted. “What’s wrong with his wings?”
