Quite coincidentally, Harrison was the attendance clerk—whatever that was—at Landmark Elementary, the same place Tami Reaverson worked. He was unattached, intelligent, and inquisitive.
Coffee turned into an offer of breakfast, and Jacques waited to be quizzed about Argent. And waited. When Harrison remained solidly in neutral territory, chatting happily about nuances of clan customs and culture, Jacques’ estimation of him soared.
“Would you like to come to Stately House?”
“Wh-what …?”
“I like you, Mr. Peck. And you’d fit right in.” Jacques wistfully added, “It wouldn’t be the first time I hired someone simply because they were perfect.”
