Too Kind

“Discover anything?”

Sonnet’s gaze dropped. “That you trust me. And that I cannot trust myself.”

“I feel doubly complimented.”

“This is awkward.”

“It needn’t be.”

Gesturing around them, Sonnet said, “I brought you into my den.”

“Lapsing into euphemisms again? A weary friend happened to drop by. You’re guilty of nothing more than hospitality.”

Sonnet radiated contrition. “You’re tired.”

“I am. But I’ve given up a night’s rest for men who held far less of my regard.”

“You’re too kind.”

“Self-indulgent is closer to the mark.” Jacques didn’t mind admitting, “I quite enjoy being at the center of your attention.”
