Called Upon

Jacques made one last circuit of the house before dragging upstairs. He needed a change of clothes, a cup of coffee, and help. Maybe Ginkgo’s?

But Jacques found Nonny sitting with his back to Jacques’ door. He joined the kid on the carpet. “I didn’t forget. I wouldn’t.”

“You forgot Christmas.”

“Nooo, I avoided Christmas.” Jacques sighed. “It’s not as if we’d made plans.”

Nonny shot him a surly look. “Promise me next year.”

Jacques frowned. “I’m sometimes called upon to…”

I’m calling upon you,” interrupted Nonny. “Promise!”

“Right. Christmas.” They shook on it. “Now… let’s see about that bath.”
