Claimer: I do hereby claim all rights and responsibility for the characters in this series of vignettes because the Amaranthine Saga is mine. (Which means I should probably behave myself since anything I say or do could be taken as canon.) Indulge the lot of us, especially for the underestimated one.

Pride and Joy
While Valor stepped back to frame the photo, Jacques fixed the angle of Isla’s beret. “Are you disappointed? That none of your family could come?”
Rolling her eyes, Isla said, “You underestimate your importance, Uncle Jackie.”
He searched her face, afraid that her smile was the brave sort.
Isla asked, “How can you care so much… and not realize why?”
Valor called, “Look this way!”
Jacques had never wanted a girl, let alone to hold hands with one. Yet here he was, hoping the shutter-snap would catch more than his good looks. Because Isla was his. And he was proud.
