Claimer: I do hereby claim all rights and responsibility for the characters in this series of vignettes because the Amaranthine Saga is mine. (Which means I should probably behave myself since anything I say or do could be taken as canon.) Indulge the lot of us, especially the one who’s missed a week of work.

Jacques returned to his room, bathed, and dressed with care. It was back to buttling, even though he was still a trifle hazy on the job description. The halls seemed overlarge after his confinement. And unusually empty. Where was everyone?
Wandering from one room to the next, Jacques found no one to greet him. No one waiting on him.
After the glow of being useful and wanted, it was a blow to realize how appallingly little he contributed to the running of Stately House.
A sudden clatter of hooves startled him, and he turned to meet a one-boy crosser stampede.
