No Go

Tsumiko lifted Jacques’ head, her dainty hands framing his face as she spoke.

“She calls you ‘highly favored one.’” Argent’s lips quirked. “Her sense of humor tends to the biblical.”

Jacques smiled wanly.

“She wants you to stay,” Argent translated. “I expect you to stay.”

He swallowed hard. “Please, my lord. I meant no disrespect.”

Argent’s brow arched. “How much wine have you had?”

Jacques recognized the out. Also, that someone had stolen his glass. And further, that his misfit yearnings could damn him. Even so, he blurted, “Not nearly enough!”

Huffing softly, Argent murmured, “There will be other opportunities.”
