Claimer: I do hereby claim all rights and responsibility for the characters in this series of vignettes because the Amaranthine Saga is mine. (Which means I should probably behave myself since anything I say or do could be taken as canon.) Indulge the lot of us, especially the one who’s used to getting his way.

Rubbish
“Surely not. My duties don’t…”
“Your arms,” repeated Hisoka Twineshaft, already shifting his hold, making the transfer.
Unable to escape, Jacques bore up under the solid weight of a boy with stripes patterning his cheeks. “Sir, I’m rubbish with children.”
“You know enough. Indeed, you made Gilen’s placement possible.”
Jacques could only shake his head.
“He needs you.”
Doubts building, Jacques shook his head more quickly.
“He has been inconsolable.” Hisoka held a finger to his lips, touched the boy’s shoulder, and something came undone.
Gilen startled awake. Large eyes filled with tears, and he began to prattle. In French.
