Done a Runner

Argent appeared suddenly, as if he’d been leaning against the door this whole time. He relieved Adoona-soh of a tawny-tailed toddler who hissed and bared tiny fangs. “Desist,” he chided.

Like that would help.

She went limp.

Touché.

Whatever Argent had done, it had the opposite effect on Nonny. “Lemme go.” The boy strained away. “I’m stronger than you.”

Jacques had no trouble grasping the underlying threat, and he didn’t fancy a hoof to the vitals. But the kid was quaking. So Jacques started walking. Away.

“Smythe?”

Lengthening his stride, Jacques made the corner of the house and kept running.
