Claimer: I do hereby claim all rights and responsibility for the characters in this series of vignettes because the Amaranthine Saga is mine. (Which means I should probably behave myself since anything I say or do could be taken as canon.) Indulge the lot of us, especially for the favorite uncle.

Wherewithal
Jacques dug in his heels almost as hard as he gripped Argent’s hand. “I can’t.”
“Focus on me.”
It was a relief to turn from the glittering sprawl that was Lapis in all his glory. “Really can’t.”
“Even if I were to reward your courage?”
“How?”
“In a manner commensurate to the challenge.” Argent held his gaze. “You will… enjoy yourself.”
Jacques found the wherewithal to mutter, “I won’t hurt Tsumiko.”
Slow in coming. Gone too soon. If a lie, it had certainly been beautiful. But Jacques thought it sly enough and wry enough to be true enough, that smile.
