Claimer: I do hereby claim all rights and responsibility for the characters in this series of vignettes because the Amaranthine Saga is mine. (Which means I should probably behave myself since anything I say or do could be taken as canon.) Indulge the lot of us, especially the unwanted one.

Gingko snorted. “Your face.”
Jacques schooled his expression. “I wouldn’t have though Argent capable of… ungentlemanly behavior.”
“Dad didn’t want what happened. For a star’s age, I thought he didn’t want me.”
Jacques looked away. “He doesn’t want me.”
“No?”
Gingko’s sly tone made Jacques suspicious. “No. To him, I’m Smythe.”
“Behind your back, you’re ‘idiot boy.’”
“Lord. And that’s better?”
“Tons better. Dad’s a fox. Listen less, look more.”
Oh, Jacques had looked plenty. “At what?”
“How about… the company you’re keeping.” Gingko offered his finger to the baby. “He wouldn’t have sent his sons if he didn’t care.”
