Lord Mettlebright’s Man
Claimer: I do hereby claim all rights and responsibility for the characters in this series of vignettes because the Amaranthine Saga is mine. (Which means I should probably behave myself since anything I say or do could be taken as canon.) Indulge the lot of us, especially for the one with emotional baggage.
Chapter Seven: Issues
To Jacques’ extreme dismay, Gingko foisted the baby on him. “I can’t. Take it back.”
“Little bro isn’t an it. He’s a crosser. Like me.” The half-fox stepped closer. “Nothing to be afraid of, Jacques.”
“But…!” He was shaking now.
Gingko’s hands came up under his. “Dad said you’re dragon-skittish, so we’re starting with a half-dose.”
That was only half the problem. “I’m terrible with kids.”
He grinned. “That’s not what Tsumiko says.”
Jacques grumbled, “You wouldn’t understand.”
“You’d be surprised.” The animation faded from Gingko’s face, leaving him looking exhausted. “My story’s not much different than this little guy’s.”
