Utmost Care

Jacques was good at puppy dog eyes. They were one of the most potent weapons in his arsenal.

As it happened, Nonny was similarly equipped. He watched Jacques’ every move with a heart-wrenchingly vulnerable expression.

There was trust here, but also the wariness of one who’d been wounded before.

Jacques was glad of Ginkgo’s presence. The half-fox murmured to Nonny throughout the proceedings. This was essentially a pact, and Ginkgo made sure the kid knew it.

Nonny needed a promise this big, and Jacques wouldn’t—couldn’t—withhold it. Even though there’d be an awkward patch until Nonny outgrew his crush.
