Nonny stood his ground. “I needta talk to Jacques.”

“And this is as good a place as any for a private word?” Argent challenged.

“Good thinking. Thanks, gov.”

“Tsk. Brat.”

It was Jacques’ private opinion—and Nonny’s good fortune—that the lord of the manor had been a rascally boy. Because Argent gave in to the bratty and the brazen far more often than the sensible ladies of Stately House ever did.

“Perhaps if you make yourself useful.” With a hand on the half-goat’s shoulder, Argent guided him inside. “Dichotomy Day is an excellent time to embark upon an apprenticeship.”
