“You devised this?”
“My lord is cleverer than I’ll ever be.” Which wasn’t an answer, but it was true. Telling the truth was important with Amaranthine.
“On your feet, Uncle. Something tells me that falling asleep in the bath would be entirely rude.”
Hisoka swayed like a drunk and toppled into bed. Jacques scolded in French until the exhausted cat sprawled across his chest. Ruffling pewter hair as it dried, Jacques encouraged purring.
“I was wrong earlier,” said Canarian. “Or half right.”
“Oh?”
“Cat’s going to love you. And I will, too.”
“For your uncle’s sake?”
“For your dressing gown.”
