Claimer: I do hereby claim all rights and responsibility for the characters in this series of vignettes because the Amaranthine Saga is mine. (Which means I should probably behave myself since anything I say or do could be taken as canon.) Indulge the lot of us, especially the one who has a rival.

In the Winter Garden
“Kidnapping’s a crime, you know.” Gingko joined Jacques on the kitchen sofa, cramming close so Kyrie could see him wiggle his ears. “Thought you didn’t like kids.”
He didn’t. Far from it. But keeping Kyrie close led to moments like this—touching, talking. “I’m more related to him than you are.”
“How do you figure?”
“Birth mother’s husband’s first-cousin.”
Gingko put a whale plushie into Kyrie’s clawed hands. “Humanly speaking, I’m his birth mother’s distant cousin’s stepson. But by Amaranthine reckoning, I’m his brother. I’m closer.”
“Not if I’m his favorite.”
“Challenge accepted.” Gingko murmured, “Kyrie’ll need kin who care.”
