Illusions helped the Elderboughs to be less obvious, but they still took side roads and back alleys to enter the urban enclave. “Smells like coffee,” remarked Coop.

“The Nightspangles run a coffee shop,” explained Torloo.

Shilah whined, “Reavers again. Why’s it always reavers?”

“I added to your wards,” soothed Ninook.

“I can still feel them.” The coyote got behind Coop and bared his teeth at the man hurrying forward. “Especially him.”

Ninook’s tail swung high. “The very one I wanted Coop to meet. You have much in common.”

“Me and a reaver?”

Torloo quietly explained, “Both humans raised by wolves.”
