Coop looked to Merl for help on what to do next. The horse clansman said, “You must be hungry.”

Right on cue, Shilah’s stomach growled.

“I will see to your wake feast.” Merl stood to go. “In the meantime… Coop, everyone would be more at ease if we knew why your friend is here. Talk it through.”

Shilah’s arms tightened around Coop, so much it almost hurt. And again, he complained, “Why would you come to a place like this?”

Coop redirected. “Why follow me?”

With a surly glance that wilted into weariness, Shilah answered, “I did it for Daroo.”
