At home, Dad was the one who looked after Daroo when he went deep. Coop and Rose helped, giving their dad breaks, but this was way different. Coop was it.

For five days.

Then seven days.

Then nine.

He grew increasingly restless. How were the battler games going? Did Pierre and Giang try the Grovel again?

Torloo stayed close, and Merl came by like always. “All right, you two. Go and stretch. Take in some fresh air and sunshine, then clean up.”

Running around felt so good.

Even better? Returning to find the coyote sitting up, his hand in Merl’s.
