The basic handsigns seemed to be universal, but Coop had invented a few of his own. “If you lick my right ear, that’s true. Lick my left ear for false.”

Mutt looked amazingly skeptical.

“And it’s always my right or left. Doesn’t matter who’s facing which way. Got it?”

He grumbled.

“I’ve also got signals for root beer, deer carrots, and rabbit stew. We probably won’t need those.”

Mutt licked his right ear.

After that, they went to find Torloo. He seemed confused. “Why not speak for yourself?”

“Umm… Mutt’s a wolf.”

“He is not Kith.”

Coop hesitated.

Mutt shifted.
