Salali promised, “You won’t get far, but I can make sure your attempt is instructive.”

Coop stayed put—as ordered—while the other boys bumped fists and started walking. Six steps in, Pierre veered left. A couple seconds later, Giang turned right.

“Are they already lost?”

“They’re smart boys. They’ll work it out. Now, then. Your packmate prettied you up with protective sigils, buuut you’re still susceptible to tricky tricksters. We’d better move ahead with Merl’s plan.”

“You mean… a partner?” Coop exclaimed.

“Time to meet Mutt,” confirmed Salali.
