The newcomer pushed up his broad-brimmed hat, getting a better look. He was Amaranthine, for sure, but definitely not a wolf. Offering his palms, he said, “I’m Coop.”

“Oh, I know who you are.” Sturdy hands touched his. “Salali Fullstash. What did expect to learn?”

“How it works.”

“You may as well say magic. It’s that far beyond you.” And nodding toward the orderly arrangement of parts, he asked, “Can you undo the damage?”

“It’s not broken.” Coop could take apart and reassemble most of the machinery back home. Appliances, too. This was nothing. “See?”

“Consider yourself forgiven. And marked.”
