Hold Out Hope

When night fell, Coop led the trackers to Daroo’s den. Boon prowled its many chambers, then lit a fire on the hearth near the entrance. Sitting on the ledge, feet kicking out over its drop-off, Coop contemplated the star-spattered sky with Torloo.

Nothing was said.

What could they say?

Eventually, Coop went inside and flopped onto heaped sleeping furs. A moment later, a wolf stretched out beside him, resting his muzzle on Coop’s chest. Just like Beast would do with Dad. Wrapping his arms around Torloo’s shaggy ruff, he whispered, “Let’s keep hoping.”

The wolf whined and licked his ear.
