The wolves responded to Coop’s assertive posture, making it clear that he was in charge. Maybe it was like Uncle Moon said earlier—just a courtesy—but it sure was useful.
Torloo stirred, finally focusing on Coop. “What are you…?”
“Blood under your claws.” He showed him the nailbrush, then kept cleaning.
“You are… worried about me?”
“Some.” Coop quietly asked, “Is that insulting?”
“It is a comfort.” Torloo’s tail twitched into a low sway. “May I stay close?”
“Yeah, of course.” And because it was sort of like the thing Daroo always told Dad, he added, “Whatever you need.”
