Lone Wolf

Outdoor cooking meant getting embers ready.

Matches and pinecones. Kindling and cordwood.

Back when Dad was a kid, Grandpa David had built an honest-to-goodness fireplace out here. They’d since added the stewpot’s firepit. And a pizza oven. School project.

Uncle Moon brought water. “How many rabbits can you use?”

“I’ll cook all they catch.”

“Eight so far.”

Coop stopped chopping wild onions. “How do you know?”

“Boon told me.”

“Huh?”

“Ah! Daroo’s alone, so you wouldn’t know.” Moon tapped his temple. “We can hear our clan’s voices—Kith and Kindred.”

Coop absorbed that. “Like Lass?”

Moon’s tail tucked. “Lass, too.”
