The breathless Amaranthine hesitated, expression vulnerable, tail tucked.

Coop took a more assertive stance, a demand to fall in line, then took off upstream at a trot.

Somewhere behind them, a gun cracked.

Were they shooting this direction? Or were there other wolves in their woods? Either way, they needed more help than Coop could give. So he threw back his head… and howled.

Wolvish had all kinds of nuances that humans couldn’t duplicate, but Coop and Daroo had worked out a pidgin wolvish code. This howl was a call for help.

Daroo arrived so fast, it made Coop proud.
