Back home, Coop escaped into the woods. Hunkered down under an overhang, he watched the rain and wondered why Chumani had kissed him… if she’d do it again… if she’d only been teasing… if he liked being teased.
Daroo came to find him.
“Are coyotes really only liars and thieves?”
“I think evasiveness is their way of protecting what they care about.” Daroo’s gaze held sympathy. “It’s said coyotes never show the same face twice.”
“Then how’d you recognize her?”
“Scent.”
Coop tugged his ponytail. “Will I see her again?”
“A better question: will you recognize Chumani when you do?”
