“We’re tricksters, Coop. Coyotes are nothing but trouble.”
“I get into trouble all the time.”
Chumani shook her head. “Look at me. What do you see?”
“A friend.”
“Describe me.”
Coop shrugged. “Someone nice.”
Incredulity dominated her expression. “You mean that.”
“Well, yeah. If I’m not honest, people would never trust me.”
“Nobody trusts a coyote.” Chumani stepped closer. “I’ve been lying this whole time.”
“Not about anything important.” Coop was sure of that much. “You like making friends and hanging out and holding hands. And me. On account of my freckles.”
“I’m bamboozling you.”
“So what? I’m having fun.”
