Tough Customer

“Hi! I’m Coop.”

She looked him up and down. “I know who you are.”

“Yeah. Same. I mean, sorta.” That’s how it was in small towns.

This woman had always been interesting to Coop, with her big hoop earrings and colorful bandanas barely containing an explosion of wiry gray hair. She had a smoker’s rasp, and today, her long nails were painted the color of cantaloupe.

She asked, “What do you want?”

Coop didn’t think she was talking about bouquets of dill or homegrown garlic. “A friend?” he suggested hopefully.

She grumbled under her breath, then demanded, “Shut your eyes.”
